April 28th Update

Writing silly recipes as a part of our measurement unit.

Finding pictures of steel objects as a part of her LiD study.

A few meal worm chrysalises before they became beetles.

Painting colorful butterfly wings using markers and coffee filters.

In gorge studies and science, we continued to read and discuss our solar system, covering Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Most of our mealworms turned to beetles and we began writing projects about gorge animals we have studied throughout the year.

We surveyed our classmates about favorite foods, animals, ice cream flavors and then graphed our survey results on a bar graph and a pictograph.

We learned to foxwalk, which is a way of walking, where you use your feet to feel ahead of you before you step down. This allowed us to move very silently and to freeze very quickly, just like foxes!

We continued to read silently for at least 25 minutes every single day!

Also, we drew animals on small wooden boards that we are going to paint and hang up on the mural. Send a paint shirt if you haven’t already!!!!

Our Week in Review: Digital Edition of the newsletter sent home 4/7

We have continued our study of punctuation marks, and what would happen in a world without them. We wrote postcards to our punctuation friends who were on vacation at the beach. We asked them to come back to us! We also wrote letters to Flat Caitlyn, a real girl who lives in Kansas.
During math, we built fraction sundaes and decorated them with crazy topping like trees, worms and rainbows. Then we calculated the fraction of the whole that each topping made up.
Our science of metamorphosis unit continues. There are more and more beetles emerging from chrysalises everyday. We learned about the two kinds of insect metamorphosis: holometabolism and hemimetabolism! Holometabolists undergo a complete metamorphosis- changing from a larva to a pupa in a cocoon and then to an adult. Hemimetabolists hatch from eggs as mini versions of the adult. They shed several skins as they grow and then become adults. We are also beginning to study the red-legged frog and the woolly bear caterpillar!
Our PE time was spent playing monster kickball. We used mats for bases and kicked a giant ball.

We have been telling jokes every morning. These are the ones we have collected. I hope you enjoy reading these jokes with your child. Please feel free to keep sending in jokes!

Our Week in Review

We saw beetles in with our meal worms! A flat Caitlyn letter came to our class. We finished our punctuation people and hung them in the hallway. We learned about period, question mark, exclamation mark, period, quotation marks, colon. We also talked about what would happen if they all left and went on vacation. We would sound like a robot with no expression. We would get our sentences confused with no endings.
Today, we did an experiment to find out which foods mealworms like the best. Some mealworms liked granola bars, bread and goldfish the best.
